Guatemala’s Volcan de Fuego erupted, leaving eight dead and hundreds injured.
Earlier today, Volcán de Fuego, whose name means “Fire” in English, shot out an 8-kilometre stream of lava and let out thick blasts of black smoke and ash that reached several regions of the country, including parts of Guatemala City. The eruption began shortly before noon: a black pillar of smoke raised from the volcano’s crater, and volcanic ash rained on nearby towns and cities. Over the next few hours, at around 4:00 p.m., a stream of lava began flowing down the side of the volcano, which lies about 44 kilometres away from Guatemala City.
