The community of San Juan Comalapa welcomed the remains of 172 unidentified victims of the State-led campaign of forced disappearances, which were returned to a memorial site in on an old military base outside of town on June 21, 2018. The day was symbolic, as June 21 marks the National Day Against Forced disappearance in Guatemala, which commemorates the memory of the tens of thousands of disappeared persons during Guatemala’s 36-year-long internal armed conflict.
