Members of the LGBT community participated this past Saturday in a parade through the streets of Zone 4 and Zone 1 of Guatemala City. Reportedly, nearly 25,000 showed up to support the LGBT community in their struggle for tolerance and equality.
In the days prior to the event, several institutions such as Guatemala’s Ministerio Público and a few embassies showed their support for the LGBT community by flying the Rainbow Flag in their headquarters. This caused the outrage of evangelical groups such as Movimiento Evangélico Nacional de Acción Pastoral and Confraternidades de Ministros Evangélicos de Guatemala. According to a public statement by these organisations, they considered placing the Rainbow Flag next to Guatemala’s National Flag to be provocative and highly disrespectful. Regardless of this, the Rainbow Flag was not taken down and the march went without a hitch.
